Scar Management

Scars are a natural part of our healing process, but sometimes they can cause pain or limit the use of the affected hand. Movement Physical Therapy has Physical Therapists who specialize in treating upper extremity injuries and we are here to help with your hand scar management.

There are several reasons as to why your hand scar may be affecting you. One reason may be that the scar is close to a tendon or muscle. As tissues heal, scars can make it more difficult to move. In this case, Movement Physical Therapy will assign specific movements for you to perform to reduce adherent scarring. The shape of your scar can, the type of scar, and the sensitivity of the scar can also all be factors towards your hand scar management.

Movement Physical Therapy wants to relieve you of any pain or any limited use of your hands so that you can continue living a normal life. Treatment will consist of scar massage, scar pads and tape, and desensitization. Scar massage will allow the scar to move the same way as the normal surrounding skin and it decreases skin sensitivity. The scar pads and tape offer compression while softening the skin into a less noticeable scar. Desensitization includes introducing different textures to your skin to decrease sensitivity. Our goal is to increase your range of movement, manage your pain, and support you in your work and leisurely goals.

Every scar heals differently and we will guide you through all the various stages of your hand scar management.
